Both historical overview and collective biography, this volume, illustrated with small color portraits on each page, begins with the life of Alfred Nobel and his achievements in business and science. Worek then discusses how the Swedish Nobel academy administers its awards, with profiles of the laureates (they are not to be called winners) in chemistry, medicine, physics, literature, peace, and, since 1969, in economics. That is a huge amount of material for one small book to cover, and with barely one paragraph dedicated to each laureate, many readers will have difficulty understanding the amazing discoveries that led to the prize. Appended color charts list the laureates in each category, but the lack of further-reading recommendations is unfortunate. The longest, most detailed chapters focus on the laureates for peace and human rights, from Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa to Amnesty International and Barack Obama. In addition to the biographies, the questions about Nobel, the creator of dynamite, will intrigue students: Did he establish the Nobel Prize to atone for harm caused by the use of his invention in war?
